Woodland Plant ID 10th/11th May

This course will provide an introduction to woodland ecology, woodland survey and woodland plant identification.  Emphasis will be made on practical survey experience and plant identification. Course participants will visit a range of woodland types located at nearby County Wildlife Sites and Devon Wildlife Trust reserves.  By the end of the course, participants will be familiar with a variety of woodland habitat types and will be confident with the identification of a range of tree, shrub and ground flora species.

Additional topics covered within the course will include woodland management, invasive species identification and woodland survey technique.

Day 1

Classroom session
Introduction to woodlands, woodland classification and an introduction to woodland plants and their identification.

Field visits
Field visits to several woodland sites including County Wildlife Sites (CWS) and Devon Wildlife Trust (DWT) nature reserves.  Focus on identification of woodland type and an introduction to woodland plant identification.

Day 2
Classroom session
Woodland management and biodiversity.

Sites we will be visiting
Woodah CWS – wet and dry semi-natural woodland,
Scanniclift Copse CWS and DWT nature reserve– ancient semi-natural woodland,
Deer park Farm CWS – lowland mixed deciduous woodland,
Ruggadon CWS and DWT nature reserve - lowland mixed deciduous woodland.

This course will be based at Woodah Farm in Devon (approximately 10 miles south of Exeter).
