Sustainable Fishing Audit

DWT/Devon & Severn IFCA

Marine data has been collected for many years by numerous individuals and organisations, often without the data entering the wider world or informing past the original brief.  Today the marine environment agenda has a higher profile due to the Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) campaign and anticipated Marine Management Plans. Many partners have data which is hidden within reports and historic diaries.

Initially, this project has sought to tease out data from a small number of identified reports, including cockle surveys on the Exe estuary. DBRC has been assisted in this exercise by three long term volunteers from DWT who have honed their data management skills during the process.  In addition to the piloting of this approach, the collaboration between the IFCA (Association of Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities), DWT, Natural England and DBRC has highlighted a number of joint objectives and will increase the sharing of data between these organisations in future.
